Recommended reading material
If you have a child with type 1 or know someone who does, I highly recommend this book:
I know quite a bit about what the child feels growing up with diabetes... and Ms. McCarty has built a guide for parents to help children with type 1 diabetes be kids.
Things to think about if you don't know any kids with diabetes and haven't seen first hand what this disease does to the child and the family:
- Imagine the first thing you hear in the morning from your parents is "What's your number?"
- Think about the six year olds you know and if they have a clue what a carbohydrate is? Mine does.
- Try to understand what it must be like to want to go play with your friends, but you can't until your blood sugar levels either comes up or goes down.
- Imagine being the child who has to hear over and over from friends that she got diabetes because her mom gave her too many sweets and finally just giving up and letting that be what they think.
This book helps to give real-world tools and tricks to help get through these issues and make life as close to the average kids. It helps get the family to a new "normal".
